Fifty years ago, on Valentine’s Day, Raleigh and Estrellita Redus moved into their brand-new house with their son Caleb, then 6, and their daughter Nyjeri, then 3. Estrellita taught at Montclair Elementary School, and she discovered the property while taking students home one day. She was also an artist, and 15 North Circle became her muse. Her personal touches are everywhere: stained glass created by students in a summer class at an Oakland school for the arts, overseen by a visiting professor; flooring laid on the diagonal; a kitchen renovated with an interior designer, featuring cabinetry sourced from Germany; a custom walk-in closet from Japan in the primary suite; and a Manzanita tree limb installed in the stairwell that is illuminated by a skylight they installed.
